Joe hears some of the same questions over and over again, and they are pretty good questions. So we thought that we would give you some of Joe’s responses, to help you know what his answers would be. This helps us all look good and helps the client make a more informed choice. If you want other opinions, call us and we’ll connect you directly with a client.
1. Is he funny?
Joe would never place himself in the same league as Tim Gard (who is one of the funniest people in the world, in his opinion), but he brings “real life” humor and storytelling to each presentation. He is from the Maritimes and that just makes him funny to start with. He weaves humor throughout his presentations and really helps us laugh at ourselves and have fun with learning. As one participant’s testimony read: “If laughter is medicine — I’m cured!”
2. When does he arrive before the presentation?
Joe will arrive early enough for you not to get nervous and think that he may not be coming. He has never missed a presentation in 20+ years in the business. He often uses a multi-media presentation and he will arrive in time to check out the equipment before his session. If the schedule requires him to do the check the night before, he’ll be there.
3. What happens if we are running late or need to expand the program?
If you know anything about the Myers-Briggs Personality Inventory, Joe is a great big “P” (Perceiver). Because of his many years’ experience, Joe is able to adapt and change direction in his delivery if necessary to help the client achieve their objectives and/or time constraints and will make it transparent to the audience. He will even make you feel like it was a part of the program. If you need to expand or contract his time on stage, just say the word and he can adapt to your needs.
4. What if things go wrong? (The A/V doesn’t work, the fire alarm goes off during the presentation, another speaker doesn’t show up, etc).
More than likely, Joe will help us laugh and not take it too seriously so that we can get on with the program and get re-focused. If you need a stand-in for another speaker, Joe will help make you and the event a success in whatever way he can.
5. How much more does he charge if we want him for a keynote and concurrent session?
For no increase in fee, Joe will deliver hie keynote, present at a concurrent session, meet with your leadership team, or facilitate a planning session during the same day for the same client. Take advantage of Joe’s facilitation and consulting skills and get more bang for your buck.
6. Will he talk to our members, staff, board, etc. prior to the session?
Joe believes is getting to know his audience. His goal is to customize the presentation to fit with the convention theme and to address the clients key issues of the day. He will be available to meet with your planning committee, talk with key opinion leaders or send out an information questionnaire prior to the session if required. But he will not just give the party line. If you want his perspective, that’s what you’ll get and hopefully that will be thought-provoking and challenge the group to think differently.
7. Does he make us play silly games?
The short answer is “no”. Some groups want to experience learning through fun activities and other’s don’t. Joe will plan the program with the client and tailor the experiences to meet their needs. He enjoys having fun and but he isn’t into doing silly things that have no purpose.
8. How much experience does he have?
A client asked Joe how much time it took him to prepare a one-hour keynote. He replied that he has been preparing all his life. Joe has been a senior manager of an international corporation and has own three businesses. He has been doing keynote, training, coaching, facilitating, and planning with groups since 1971. He was awarded the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation in 2003. Joe has also been inducted to the Canadian Speaking Hall of Fame. But, check out the NEXT answer before you make up your mind.
9. Is he just a motivational speaker or does he have any content?
He hasn’t climbed Mt. Everest, but he has conquered real-life obstacles that makes his content real. He has spent a lot of time working with real people, doing real work in a turbulent, transforming world. So that’s what he talks about – change, courage and getting people connected. He shares his experience and insights to help each of his participants achieve their dreams. Joe is on the Executive Development Faculty of the Schulich School of Business at York University and achieves the highest ratings in course evaluations. Guess you would have to say that he is a ‘high-content speaker’ that leaves people with hope, energy and enthusiasm.
